Kintsugi — meaning "golden joinery" — emerged in 15th-century Japan. Legend holds that a shogun sent a broken tea bowl to China for repair, and was dissatisfied with the metal staples used to hold it together. Japanese craftsmen sought a more beautiful solution: filling the cracks with lacquer mixed with gold.
金継ぎ,意为"以金修复",起源于15世纪日本。相传一位将军将破损的茶碗送往中国修复,却对金属扣钉的修法感到不满。日本工匠由此探索出更美的解法:以混入金粉的漆填补裂痕。
What began as a practical repair technique became something far greater — a reflection of the Japanese aesthetic philosophy of wabi-sabi: finding beauty in imperfection, impermanence, and the marks left by time.

At the heart of kintsugi is wabi-sabi — a Japanese worldview that embraces transience, incompleteness, and the beauty of age. Where Western traditions often seek to restore objects to their original, "perfect" state, wabi-sabi asks a different question: what if the damage is part of the story?
金継ぎ的核心是侘寂——一种接纳无常、残缺与岁月之美的日本世界观。西方传统往往追求将器物复原至"完美"的原始状态,而侘寂提出了另一个问题:如果破损本身就是故事的一部分呢?
Kintsugi does not hide the break. It celebrates it. The gold lines trace the history of the object — every fall, every repair, every year of use. A kintsugi-repaired piece is not returned to what it was. It becomes something it never was before.

In recent years, kintsugi has become popular worldwide — and with it, a flood of "modern" alternatives using epoxy resin and gold-coloured paint. The results may look similar at first glance, but the difference in material, philosophy, and longevity is significant.

Every repair we undertake uses only two principal materials — both authentic, both irreplaceable.

Harvested from the urushi tree (Toxicodendron vernicifluum), raw urushi is one of the world's oldest natural adhesives. Once fully cured — a process that takes weeks in a humidity-controlled environment — it becomes food-safe, waterproof, and extraordinarily durable. The same lacquer has been used on Japanese tableware for over a thousand years.
生漆提取自漆树(Toxicodendron vernicifluum),是世界上最古老的天然黏合剂之一。在湿度适宜的环境中经数周缓慢固化后,生漆具备食品安全性、防水性与极强的耐久性。同款漆料已在日本漆器上沿用逾千年。
We use genuine gold powder — not gold paint, not gold-coloured mica. Real gold does not tarnish, does not fade, and develops a richer, deeper tone over years of use. The gold lines on a traditionally repaired piece become more beautiful with every passing year.
我们使用真正的金粉——不是金色涂料,不是云母粉。真金不氧化、不褪色,随着使用年月的积累,金线会愈发深沉醇厚。传统金継ぎ修复的器物,岁月越久,越是美丽。
Why it takes weeks

Traditional kintsugi cannot be rushed. Each stage requires the previous layer to cure fully before the next can begin. This is not inefficiency — it is the craft working exactly as it should.
传统金継ぎ急不来。每个阶段都必须等上一层完全固化,才能进行下一步。这不是低效,而是工艺本该有的节奏。
Cleaning & Assessment
清洁与评估
Each piece is carefully cleaned and assessed. Fragments are sorted, missing pieces identified, and a repair plan is made.
仔细清洁每件器物并评估损坏情况,整理碎片,确认缺失部分,制定修复方案。
Joining with Mugi-urushi
麦漆粘合
Fragments are joined using mugi-urushi — a mixture of raw urushi and wheat flour. This adhesive is flexible, strong, and food-safe. Each join must cure in a humidity-controlled environment before the next step.
使用麦漆(生漆与小麦粉的混合物)粘合碎片。这种粘合剂柔韧、牢固且食品安全。每个粘合处须在湿度适宜的环境中固化后,方可进行下一步。
Filling & Levelling
填补与整平
Gaps and missing areas are filled with sabi-urushi — urushi mixed with fine powder — applied in multiple thin layers, each allowed to cure fully. This stage can take several weeks.
以錆漆(生漆与细粉的混合物)多层填补空隙与缺失部位,每层均须完全固化。此阶段可能历时数周。
Applying the Gold
上金
Once the surface is smooth and fully cured, a final layer of urushi is applied to the repair lines — and genuine gold powder is dusted on while the lacquer is still tacky. The gold bonds to the lacquer permanently.
待表面平整并完全固化后,在修复线上涂抹最后一层生漆,趁漆未干时撒上真金粉。金粉永久附着于漆层之上。
Final Cure & Polishing
最终固化与抛光
The piece rests in a humidity-controlled chamber for final curing. Once complete, the gold lines are gently polished. The piece is now food-safe, ready to use, and ready to age beautifully.
器物在湿度受控的环境中完成最终固化。固化完成后,轻柔抛光金线。此时,器物已具备食品安全性,可直接使用,并将随岁月愈发动人。
